Throwback Movie Review: Avatar (Plus all the latest on Avatar 2)

Avatar, Aliens, Action, Visuals and the legendary James Cameron.

Avatar was released back in 2009 and was the biggest commercial movie success ever. This record was beaten 10 years later by Avenger- Endgame however one can argue that it took the Marvel universe about 11 movies to build up to an epic conclusion that was Endgame while Avatar accomplished all it did with just one movie. Endgame ended the box office at $2.790 while Avatar did so at $2.789 billion dollars.

When Avatar was released in 2009 audiences at the time had seen nothing like it. The visuals were amazing, it was a living breathing world with little details in the plants and animals that some of us could never dream of. The world was bright and beautiful while every aspect looked amazingly real. Every aspect of world building (a term that gamers usually use) was amazing. The human technology advancements were also up-to par to a species that was in a position to colonize another planet. It had turned the normal Alien formula on to its head, this time it was us the humans Aliens in another creatures world and this time we were the villains. A brilliant piece of cinematic story telling.

Apart from the world, the characters also played a part to bring the story to life. Exceptional acting work was seen by the villain played by Stephen Lang. The female lead was played by Zoe Saldana, the only actor to be apart of two $2 Billion dollar movies (She also plays Gamora in Avengers and Gardians of the Galaxy). Some movie goers and critics criticized the movie for its pacing and basic story. The story does follow a village life-style feel and some found this boring or complained about the movie being too long.

Well how does it hold up today.

More than 10 years later Avatar is still a visual treat. With creatures, machines, action and notable acting it is still an enjoyable near 3 hour movie. If you haven’t seen this, you are missing an essential part of cinematic history but you are in for a treat when you decide to watch it. If you have seen this before it still proves an awesome movie night with friends or family. We here at FijiTainment have seen the movie more then 10 times yet we are still down for another round. It is just so enjoyable to watch, with even the plants of the world demanding your attention.

Due to the amount of fun we had with the movie, its commercial sucess, its ability to still be relevant 10 years later and the pure visual pleasure we rate it a

10/10

A must watch

Avatar 2 has been in development for quite some time. 2 days ago James Cameron and 55 crew members were given permission to enter New Zealands’ boarders to continue shooting for the sequel. Very little is known about the movie at this point, it has been delayed a few times now. Sources claim that there are initially 5 Avatar movies planned with each being (almost) a standalone movie. Meaning you don’t have to see Avatar to understand Avatar 2. From the limited info available the new movie will follow Sam as chief of the village. The movie will however focus on his children. Avatar 2 according to James Cameron will feature more underwater and volcanic island environments that will according to Cameron make “you shit yourself with your mouth wide open“. Some characters who originally died in the first movie have been cast again for the sequel. Fans still don’t know what role they will play.

All this makes us crave the movie more. Currently rumored to release on December 2021, it has been delayed before (from 2014!!) and may be delayed again. Making masterpiece movies like these takes a lot of time. Lets hope we get to see another Avatar movie soon that will surely re-define cinematic history and production as a whole.
